Comic #185: Finding His Talent

Monday, February 11th, 2013

This continues the story of how I discovered I could play piano. Like I mentioned for the last page, I was about half of Peter’s age when I found my sister’s keyboard and figured out how to play Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I immediately took it to my mom to show her what I could do (as all little kids do when they’re proud of something). She was extremely impressed, but sadly our family’s financial situation wasn’t well enough off to afford a piano, so they ended up buying me my own larger keyboard to play with. It wasn’t until sixth grade (several years later) that we were finally able to get a piano so I could start taking proper piano lessons.

Luckily, Peter won’t have to wait that long. :)

Oh, and the sheet music he’s playing is the dungeon theme for the original NES Legend of Zelda (now obviously the first songs I figured out were much simpler and only used one hand, but we don’t have all the time in the world to wait for Peter to figure that out, hehe). Pretty much 90% of the music I played before taking classical lessons was video game and movie soundtracks, all figured out by ear. Even nowadays one of the first things I play when I sit down is likely a Mario or MegaMan song.

So, how is the animated pilot coming along?

  2. NekuKoneko Says:

I almost recognized it, but lack of knowing exactly how to read music kept me from knowing just how long each note was held for in the left hand’s case. Bluh!
Either way, yay! Update! And a good one. :3

I just finished reading this up to this strip. Its been like enjoying a cold crisp white wine; full of flavour and alluring colours. I can honestly say this has taken top rank in my favorites list.
Peter kinda reminds me of Bill Bailey in a Black Books sketch, a heretofore unknown gifted musician. Very funny.

  9. Katayamma Says:

Do you still have a keyboard or piano? If so, do you still play? And if so, how about a youtube of you playing?

    =^_^=

If this was in a normal treble scale (From a saxophones player’s standpoint) They would be 8th notes in a 4/4 time signature.

Oh how this brought back memories. When I was lil, we went to my grandmother’s house every know and then, and there was an old roll-player piano in the basement. Being kids, me and my brothers would mess with it sometimes, getting it to play itself at one point. Some way or another, I walked up to it and started picking out what I think was either the theme from Spongebob, or the theme from Mario Bros. My mom ran down to see what was going on, saw me playing a simple little melody, told everyone, and next thing I remember, she lugged home a top-of-the-line digital piano (which was a far better instrument than an 85 year old pianola that couldn’t hold a tune). Unlike most situations where parents think their child is the next Mozart, I actually was a prodigy. Took lessons from a lady at church, and progressed rapidly, playing video game themes in addition to the usual Bach and dumb technical books (she was awesomely lenient in regards to repertoire). A year later, I began studying with a virtuoso pianist who drilled me in technique, fingering, etc. By that point (5th grade), I was moving onto Scott Joplin, Brahms, and other advanced literature. Then I lost interest in middle school, never to touch it for the next 3 years. Then I stopped by a Steinway shop at the mall (i ain’t kidding here), and decided to play what I could remember of the Maple Leaf Rag, improvising as best I could, and decided why not try it again. Later that day, I decided to play our piano, by now all beat up and crappy, and then an eerie repeat of the first time I played. Then we searched for a new piano, a bonafide non-ghetto acoustic. After much deliberation and some dealer coercion, we bought a top of the line Kawai K3. I’m now playing at a higher level than I was before, and contnue playing what I love. I’ve also dabbled in other instrumemts, composition, and arranging.

tl; dr this brings back memories
