Comic #138: Higher Ground

Another glimpse into Chelsea’s newly-revealed obsession with Peter. Kinda makes you wonder how long she’s been watching him like this.

An interesting little bit is the cliche “binocular view” effect used up there. In reality looking through a binocular actually looks like a single circle — because of how your eyes focus through both sides at once and merge into one solid view — so I always wondered where the idea came from of having two connected circles in silhouette representing it. It’s just another one of those things that makes no real logical sense but is widely accepted as the norm for storytelling purposes, I suppose.

Because the single circle is the universal comic standard for a telescope. :)

You’d think a cat would be much more at ease up a tree than Chelsea is… :D

    Um, EZZY, sorry :D

  4. Pete Bagheera Says:

The binocular silhouette is caused by the comics being drawn using perspective instead of being drawn in true 3 dimensions. The error introduced by the perspective transform from 3D to 2D (denoted as 2D(x,y) = P{3D(x,y,z)} ) becomes more severe as the coordinates approach the observer (or in other words, as y approaches 0). This causes the two halves of the binocular view not to perfectly align in the 2D comical domain.

(I can probably ramble pages of this pseudo science, but it’d bore you to death)

Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

Took a break from reading for a while when updates slowed–I’m so happy to return and see so many new pages! I hope school is going well for you, too…

Anyway– It’s my opinion that the dual-circle for binocular view might’ve just been a good way to include more in the frame ^__^ You can fit more detail into two viewing circles than 1.. Just as with a telescope, you’re limited to looking with one eye and can only see -so much-…. With Binoculars, you’re looking with two eyes and can have a broader view. *shrug* Just a hypothesis ^_^ It could also be that we’re looking through the binoculars through the character’s eyes? Since we’re not the ones looking through them, the focus isn’t exact? lol. I like the 1st idea better.
