Comic #120: The Ill-Fated Hat

Monday, March 16th, 2009

So now we’re seeing a bit more of Eddy’s role in the whole story. He has quite a few abilities that are above and beyond the ordinary Guardians. In addition to being able to transform his shape like Persephoni and interact with ordinary people in broad daylight, apparently he can also burn things with his mind. Awesome.

No real backgrounds to speak of in this comic, mostly because I’m just getting my feet back on the ground and I didn’t want to take any more time on this page than I already have at this point. I’ll add some extra details in when it comes time to put together the next book. Also, the title of this page is dedicated to the poor hat that is subjected to the demonstration of Eddy’s pyrokinetic abilities. What did that hat ever do to him?!

Edit: Well, that was screwy! The site decided to glitch up a bit for a day or so and not let any of the comments pages or old posts show up (it turns out it was a problem with the MySQL database). It should be all fixed and back to normal now. Sorry to anyone who had problems with commenting!

For every $30 that is donated overall, a page will be posted in full color!

Hey, don’t worry man, I can’t speak for anyone else but I’m just glad to know that it will be updating, no matter how long I wait for it, I was slightly worried because two of my other favorite web comics just suddenly stopped this week, I thought that might have happened here, glad it didn’t :)

I love how this comic doesn’t have backgrounds. Its not really necessary, and really gives your characters subtlety, as seen in this tutorial http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2015294/. [ED: bit of a language warning on the link there, just FYI to those who click it]

Yup, sometimes backgrounds aren’t required, but it’s good practice to use them whenever possible, particularly for establishing shots to let readers know where the heck the characters are standing. It really boils down to the artist’s own preferences and their own sense of storytelling. Indoor scenes don’t necessarily require detailed environments, since the characters could very well just be standing in front of a plain white wall for all we know. Lately the only time I’ve been pushing myself to include a background in EVERY panel is during outdoor scenes, where nature is a prominent element of the surroundings.

But that’s also because I just freaking love drawing trees. ;)

  9. Hobbes Says:

Lol, I thought when you said backgrounds, I thought you were talking about the characters and not the artistic background. hahahaha, omg, yeah. You usually do have backgrounds when it counts. Sorry for no warning for that link. I was pointing out that subtlety makes the characters, and just saying all the background isn’t really necessary. And the trees rock b/c they tell the readers that the characters are outside. There is not many indoor backgrounds in very many comics really, its not as vibrant as outdoors.
