Comic #113: A Little Spy Work

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I’m a sucker for continuity. It’s one of the reasons why I love shows like Futurama so much.

So yes, this is page three of the return of Fritz and Munchkinn. I know it took me a lot longer to get the wheels spinning on this story than I had hoped, but at least now I’ve got some momentum for the next few pages. Hopefully I can keep it going well into the next school term.

In other news, I wanted to toss an idea past everyone. I came up with the idea to sell a series of collectible hand-drawn “trading cards” with the Peter & Company cast. I thought it might be cool to come up with a series of 15-20 or so different cards, each featuring portraits, scenes, and character bio information/scenario descriptions on the back. Each card would be hand-drawn, inked, signed, numbered, and finished with ink wash like in Chronicles of Ademar. The characters and scenes would be the same depending on the card number, but the individual cards would obviously vary a bit in the actual artwork since I’ll be drawing them instead of printing. I figure I’d sell each individual card for a buck a piece. I haven’t decided yet if I would make the card distribution random or let people pick & choose which ones they want, but I just wanted to make sure that this was something that people would actually want to spend their money on. Let me know in the comments section if you’d be interested in this, as well as if you want to see any particular characters/scenes aside from the obvious main cast bio cards.

And speaking of Ademar, don’t forget that I’ve begun updating the new site with content every Monday.

    Woot! First!
I can connect with the worms.

  2. Keylaleigh Says:

No Wormy action in this storyline? Aww… I was looking forward to their antics again…

  3. Jon Ponikvar Says:

Hey, the worms are crafty. I wouldn’t rule them out of the story just yet. ;)

  4. Origamist....is this your card? Says:

Gah! Oh omnipotent Jon, how do you do smilies and bold font? Can you do the oh how amazo=ing italics, too?

  5. Jon Ponikvar Says:

Italics? No, I don’t think I can do those.

  6. Origamist....is this your card? Says:

    …….

    I hate technology.

  7. Kyle Says:

Great to see this story resume. Though I can’t quite tell what the device is doing in the second last panel.

  8. Red Reptile Says:

    Yay for new storyline!!!

I would definately buy a trading card! Especially one of Seth. He’s awesome.

  9. Mike Says:

I completely agree with you on the continuity thing. Some shows and comics that are all basically self contained or one-shots can still be great, but nothing beats references and in-jokes to stuff that’s happened before. Makes you feel like you’re really a part of something, or watching a real world.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I’ll be making a post soon with a complete list of cards (I’ve come up with 40 so far, and the list may possibly grow larger as I start making them) and a finalized pricing scheme. I’ve worked out that it will take me roughly an hour or so to produce a single card from start to finish, so I should be able to crank these things out at a pretty decent rate!

Kyle: The second-to-last panel shows Seth hitting a button on the remote and activating the sensors around the house. The left side of the panel shows the house bathed in light and shadows from the sensors. I think I messed up a bit on the perspective, which is probably why it looks a little strange.

  11. Origamist Says:

Perspectivity is hard to find, eh? Coo.

Hey guys. I’m going to have to delay the next page (and the next Ademar update) for a week. I got hit with a flu bug on Thursday and it’s been thoroughly beating me down for the past several days. At this point I can barely stand without falling over from dizziness, let alone draw, so until I can knock this out I’m not going to be able to get anything done.

I’ll probably make a post tomorrow about the refined cards idea just to get more feedback, but there won’t be a comic this week, unfortunately. Sorry guys!

  13. Pete Bagheera Says:

I’m definitely interested! Will you be shipping those cards over seas?

    Get well soon!!

    -P.
